If you're shooting combat-style pistol matches or competing in 3-Gun, you’re not only trying to get good hits, you're trying to get them fast. That devilish device the range master holds in his hand — the one that goes beep — not only signals that it's time to start shooting, it keeps a time track of every shot you fire. Shot timers sell for about a hundred bucks, and one might be just what you need to get a better score.

One of the great mysteries about the 5.56 NATO AR is "barrel twist." This refers to the twist rate of the rifling in the barrel that applies spin to the bullet — spin stabilizes the bullet — and it's something that many shooters don't know that much about. Using the correct bullet to match your AR barrel twist rate, or vice versa, is critical for accuracy.

You can shoot at lots of different targets with a real pistol, rifle or shotgun, often from odd positions, such as from under a car, while sliding down a zip line or as you run down a tunnel. This is like entering the virtual world of gaming, only it's all real ... which is so much better.

Now that the dust has started to settle from the monthslong fight over Kaput, it’s worth taking a step back and examining where we stand with the feral hog problem in the Lone Star State. In many respects, we’re pretty close to where we started when Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller approved the warfarin-based poison commercially known as Kaput back in late February.

Senate Republicans recently filed legislation to stop the controversial requirement for gun dealers along the U.S.-Mexico border to report multiple rifle sales to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Termed the Protecting the Second Amendment Act, the measure was introduced by U.S. Sen. Luther Strange, R-Alabama, with Texas Republicans Ted Cruz and John Cornyn signed on as co-sponsors. It aims to repeal a 2011 rule that Federal Firearms License holders in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas report whenever, during a five-day period, the same buyer purchases two or more rifles.

Bad news for summer barbecues: the lone star tick is spreading. This tiny bloodsucker is thought to have given thousands of Americans a dangerous meat allergy, one that has many folks swearing off steaks and ribs altogether. Once thought to be confined to the southeastern United States, the allergy is appearing in people who live all the way up in northern Minnesota. The tick is moving westward, too, if reports from Kansas are any indication.

Smith & Wesson's M&P 15-22 is a great platform. It fires .22 Long Rifle caliber, which isn't a cheap as it used to be but still less than firing .223/5.56. The 15-22 is reliable. As far as manipulations go, it's very close to the actual AR platform. Plus, with aftermarket parts you can set one up just like you want.
