Guns in church, the debate over armed preachers heats up

Every email Carl Chinn sends features the same signature: His name, followed by Chapter 4, Verse 9 from the Book of Nehemiah. "We prayed to our God and posted a guard." On Sept. 10, Chinn will lead a seminar for several local, faith-based organizations in Oak Creek, Wis., the same community where a gunman opened fire in a Sikh temple, killing six people and wounding four others. Chinn, a church security consultant, will suggest arming designating church-goers during services.

Changes in Texas CHL law — Campus parking lot protection

A number of laws affecting concealed handgun licensees and instructors were passed by the 83rd Texas Legislature during its regular 2013 session and signed by the Gov. Rick Perry, to become effective Sept. 1. The most complex changes come to the campus parking lot regulations in SB 1907. The changes are briefly described, along with comments regarding their significance, and things to watch out for.

Do you truly understand Texas gun laws

Many of you have probably heard the phrase, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse," but do you really know what it means? The phrase, which derives from the Latin phrase, "Ignorantia legis neminem excusat," is a legal doctrine which states that even if a person claims to be unaware of what a law means, it doesn't allow them the ability to avoid the consequence or liability that comes as a result of violating that law.

White House responds to 'Gun Free Zone' petition — Politicians need armed security

Gun owners peacefully protest in McAllen

Nearly 70 people — many carrying assault weapons, hunting rifles and shotguns — gathered outside the McAllen Police Department, demonstrating their open carry rights. Open Carry Texas, which advocates for gun rights, organized the peaceful protest two days after police arrested Zach W. Horton, 37, of Little Elm, for carrying an assault-style weapon near the McAllen Public Safety Building. Police charged Horton with carrying a weapon where prohibited, a third-degree felony.

Firearms manufacturer Ruger officially chooses Mayodan for plant

When it came to Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. choosing where to open its third firearms manufacturing plant, the decision didn't come down to buildings, incentives or even how gun friendly the community was. Ruger chose Mayodan, N.C., and a vacant 220,000-square-foot plant because the potential local workforce "was such a great fit for our company culture," chief executive Michael Fifer.

Zimmerman verdict sparks interest in insurance programs that defend gun owners

The Florida acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager who Zimmerman said he shot in self-defense, has resulted in a surge of business for a Texas company that insures gun owners. "People who have seen what happened to Zimmerman began to consider their own circumstances and asked how would their life be affected if something like that happened to them," said attorney Edwin Walker, co-founder of Texas Law Shield.

Ohio instructor shoots student in gun-safety class

A 73-year-old Ohio man accidentally shot a student with a .38-caliber bullet when he was teaching a daylong gun-safety class for people seeking concealed-carry permits. Terry J. Dunlap Sr. was the instructor and the shooter, reports The Columbus Dispatch.
