Teaching kids respect for guns doesn't infringe on gun rights
The Boston Globe
Susan Hamilton is a native Texan, and she has been around guns all her life. For Hamilton's family and neighbors, guns and hunting are deeply woven into the fabric of our lives. Neither, however, is treated as something to be taken lightly. Hamilton has a daughter whom she is willing — even eager — to teach how to handle a gun. But I’m not willing for her to die doing so.

Whitetail deer: Goodbye velvet, hello hard horns
Outdoor Life
Each year it happens sometime around Labor Day. It’s velvet-peeling time. Gun control is not the answer to our crime problem: James Varney
The Times-Picayune
One of the enduring myths in our political landscape is the allegedly unassailable power of the National Rifle Association. The real power, of course, is with the rifle. And a lot of public policy discussions might improve if that fact was not only recognized but also appreciated. As even the left-wingers at ThinkProgress acknowledge, "a majority of Americans believe in a broad right to own guns."

A relationship with deadeye aim: Gun-instructor couple got their start sharing a love of firearms
The Dallas Morning News
Leon and Frillie Measures got married in 1953. They’ve been dove hunting together even longer — since before 1950, by Leon’s calculations. His thoughts sometimes drift off course like a dove sliding beyond shotgun range of a fidgety hunter. By any Measures, this couple is a team. Using a simple BB gun as a teaching tool, they’ve taught thousands of people to “shoot where you look.” It’s the good cop, bad cop routine.

State of the Birds report shows pintail decline, other waterfowl doing well
Lone Star Outdoor News
Most duck hunters realize the overall population of the birds they hunt are doing historically well. But one species is struggling. A new report from the U.S. Committee of the North American Bird Conservation Initiative shows encouraging population gains for some wetland-dependent bird species. At the same time, the report’s authors warn about the future implications of the continuing loss of ephemeral or temporary wetlands in the prairies of the United States and Canada.
