Texas requests to buy guns plummet
KPRC-TV
The number of Texans seeking federal permission to purchase firearms has dropped 18 percent this year as fears of tougher regulations subside. The Houston Chronicle reports that experts attribute the slowdown to waning fears of stricter federal regulations. Gun sales spiked across the nation after the Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school massacre in 2012. Texans submitted nearly 1.1 million requests to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives from January to August 2013. That number has dropped to about 910,000 for the same period this year.

Best states for concealed carry 2014
Guns & Ammo
It has been nearly 30 years since Florida started the CCW ball rolling across the nation and the modern concealed carry revolution began. Since that time, the national pendulum has swung to the point of shall-issue carry laws being the rule rather than the exception. Even Illinois has joined the ranks of Right to Carry states, and it’s possible that we could see permits issued in D.C. before the year is out. Things are good and looking even better for Americans who exercise their right to self-preservation by means of carrying a concealed firearm.

Oddball tactics for locked-down bucks
Field & Stream
When bucks are locked down, try these four far-out approaches to get within range. When deer movement freezes up during lockdown and your usual tactics fail, it's time to get creative. First, locate a buck and doe in an isolated spot or choose a site where you've found breeding pairs in the past. Good areas include the edges of rut chasing grounds, clusters of cedars, islands of brush in fields, dry hummocks in swamps, isolated patches of tall grass, thickets below pond dams and clusters of storm-felled trees. Then try one of these oddball tactics.

'Don't lie for the other guy' is a tool box for retailers, not a hammer to be used against them
National Shooting Sports Foundation
“Don’t Lie for the Other Guy” was formed as a cooperative program between the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) more than a dozen years years ago to help ATF educate federal firearms licensees to be better able to identify and prevent illegal straw purchases of firearms and to raise public awareness about the seriousness of the crime of purchasing a firearm for someone who cannot legally do so.

Modern target shooters trending young, female and city-dwelling
National Shooting Sports Foundation via GUNS
Younger people, city-dwellers and females are quickly becoming the faces of target shooting, according to numbers released last week by the Connecticut-based National Sports Shooting Foundation. Females made up 37 percent of new shooters and only 22 percent of experienced trigger fingers during the five-year period. New target shooters also got a start later in life — some 77 percent of them didn’t pick up a gun for sport until after the age of 18. Just 19 percent of established shooters were older than 18 when they first took aim.

The best shooting positions for hunting
By John McAdams
Unfortunately, many hunters do the vast majority of their shooting from a bench rest, which is not the best practice for taking shots under typical hunting conditions. Now I don't know about you, but I've never taken a shot at a deer or any other big game species from a bench rest. For this reason, it is important that hunters learn to shoot from positions they are more likely to use when hunting. This article describes my choices for the best hunting shooting positions and the advantages and disadvantages for each one.

3-gun essentials: Target diversity
AmmoLand
One of the coolest things about 3-Gun is the fact that we get the opportunity to shoot targets that range from arms-reach distance all the way out to 500+ yards, sometimes in the same course of fire. That target diversity is also one of the toughest aspects of the sport. It requires tremendous discipline to dial our speed, and focus level up and down accordingly. It’s very important to have drills in your practice regimen that sharpen this skill.

Devastating new deer ammo from Winchester
Field & Stream
Years in the making (and nearly a year in the naming), Deer Season XP features a radically new polymer tip. In a word, it’s big — bigger than you’ve seen before. And when that big tip disintegrates on impact, the part of the bullet that smacks your deer is fat — fatter than that of other pointy bullets. In essence, you’ve got a big, fat wadcutter bullet with polymer-tip flight and rapid expansion designed to drop deer where they stand.

Some notes on air travel with guns
Field and Stream
Hunting season is once more approaching, and some of us will have to undergo the horrors of travel by air in order to go afield. Going up in the unfriendly skies is, by itself, a loathsome experience, but flying with guns is special. As a customer (Why no longer a passenger?) the airlines consider you an annoyance.

10 greatest lever-action rifles of all time
Rifle Shooter
If numbers excite you, you probably aren’t into lever guns. Bolt-action rifles are generally more accurate than lever actions, and lever actions will never match the rate of fire achieved by a semiauto. That said, if you appreciate history and nostalgia, you probably have a soft spot for the beleaguered lever gun.

Power factor and recoil: Which bullet weight gives you the edge?
Shooting Times
Many organized shooting sports require ammunition to achieve a minimum power level to qualify and be scored in a specific division. This is known as power factor. Power factor is calculated by the formula: bullet weight times velocity divided by 1000. Power factor requirements are determined by which division one competes in, and might be caliber specific.
