The impossibility of gun control
The Star
The Navy Yard massacre won't revive the gun debate in Congress for a simple reason: There is no gun-control agenda this side of a total ban and confiscation that would have stopped Aaron Alexis. The Toomey-Manchin bill could have passed Congress unanimously. The assault-weapons ban could still be in place. Gun-controllers could have achieved their long-ago goal of barring the private purchase of handguns. And every step of his mayhem at the Washington Navy Yard would have been unimpeded.

Union leaders opposing California bill to ban lead bullets for hunters
Fox News
Several unions have joined in opposition to a California bill that would stop hunters from using lead bullets, and have asked Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown not to sign the legislation. The Democratic-led Legislature passed the bill earlier in September, based in part on studies that appear to show animals ingest lead fragments found in the soil and the dead prey they eat, which can contaminate the human food supply.

UN Arms Treaty will be menace to US for years to come
Fox News
Secretary of State John Kerry's signature of the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty was a serious error, one that will have far-reaching consequences for American foreign policy and American sovereignty. Those consequences will be even worse because the Senate, which has signaled many times that it is opposed to the treaty, will likely have no real opportunity to reject it.

"Until we start addressing mental health issues," the senator said, "I don't think more gun laws are going to do any good."

Do we overreact to people carrying guns?
KEYE-TV
If you're new to Texas you may not know that it is perfectly legal to carry a rifle or other long gun out in the open in most cases. So why were police called and a school put on lockdown when someone reported seeing a man with a rifle near Winn Elementary in Northeast Austin? Austin ISD Police Chief Eric Mendez says, "We're going to err on the side of precaution and we're going to make sure the students are safe. We don't know where the individual is that's reported to have a long gun. We don't know what the individual's intent is."

State battles intensify on access to guns
KETK-TV
Debate over guns continues to inflame the nation, especially after the mass killings in a Connecticut school late last year that prompted President Barack Obama to seek new federal restrictions. Obama's efforts have stalled, but several states are now redefining their own laws for firearms. Those measures run the gamut. On one hand, New York toughed its gun laws. But in one extreme, Missouri sought to effectively obliterate federal gun laws, which eventually failed.

Federal judge denies bids to block provisions of Maryland's new gun-control law
The Washington Post
A federal judge denied a pair of requests to suspend key provisions in Maryland's brand-new gun-control law, ruling that the plaintiffs had not made the case for the "extraordinary relief" they were seeking. In denying the temporary restraining orders, U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Blake faulted gun-rights advocates for waiting to challenge a law signed in May by Gov. Martin O'Malley. The new law, which includes strict licensing requirements for handguns and a ban on purchases of 45 types of assault rifles, took effect on Oct. 1, hours before the court hearing.
