2 arrested following open carry protest
KTBC-TV
Two gun advocates were arrested at the Capitol during a Veterans Day ceremony. The president of open carry Texas, C.J. Grisham, was taken into custody while he was speaking on the north side of the capitol. While that was happening on the south Capitol steps a ceremony was underway to recognize veterans. The open carry group wants state lawmakers to make it legal to display a hand gun the same way it is currently legal to carry a long rifle out on the open.

Davis not pushing gun control, but like Bloomberg has favored gun show checks
Austin American-Statesman
Austin political consultant Steven Rivas drew our attention to a claim on a donation Web page for Greg Abbott's gubernatorial campaign saying state Sen. Wendy Davis is "fighting to bring California values to Texas" including "Bloomberg-style gun control." Setting aside how much California agrees with New York's gun-control advocate mayor Michael Bloomberg, we thought Texans would want to know Davis' views, as her bid to become governor is the first statewide campaign for the Fort Worth Democrat.
Abbott calls for 'open carry,' greater privacy protections
KVUE-TV
Republican candidate for governor Greg Abbott said he supports making it legal to openly carry handguns in public and wants to place stricter limits on state agencies selling personal information from public records. The Texas attorney general promised that if elected he also would support allowing guns on college campuses. Texas would become the fifth state to make a person's DNA information their personal property under legislation Abbott said he supported during a policy speech to a political rally in Corpus Christi.

California Court of Appeals confirms ruling striking down ammunition sales restrictions
Ammo Land
On Nov. 6, the California Court of Appeals for the 5th District affirmed the lower court's issuance of a permanent injunction in the NRA/CRPA backed legal challenge to Assembly Bill (AB) 962, Parker v. California. AB 962 would have banned mail order ammunition sales and required all purchases of so-called "handgun ammunition" to be registered. The court's 41 page published opinion confirms that AB 962 is unconstitutionally vague and cannot be enforced.
Texas police work to comply with gun law
Longview News-Journal
Two months after it went into effect, local law enforcement agencies are working to catch up with a new Texas state law that gives them authority to seize weapons from people in mental crisis. "We are in the process of looking at our policy and procedures to bring us up to date with current law and educating our officers," said Kristie Brian, a spokeswoman for the Longview Police Department.

Ted Cruz talks guns, same-sex marriage, Obamacare with Jay Leno
CBS News
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, fended off a series of surprisingly solemn questions from comedian Jay Leno during an appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show," reiterating his hard-line opposition to Obamacare and defending his role in creating October's 16-day government shutdown. Leno dispensed with the levity almost immediately, asking Cruz about reports that his colleagues view the freshman senator as "aggressive, arrogant and abrasive."

Respectful hunters avoid trespassing
Billings Gazette
Trespassing is an easy crime to pooh-pooh when you can hear a rare life list bird species over the hill or if the perfect mountain biking route cuts the corner of someone else's back 40. Even some hunters — the one outdoor group that's specifically schooled on trespassing laws during mandatory hunter education courses — can rationalize going through another person's fence for a quick shot at game that's eluded them everywhere else. But nothing about hunting is more basic than respecting the land that provides our game and getting permission before entering private property.

Getting the most from trail cameras during the rut
Ammo Land
A big advantage hunters have this time of year is the bucks do a fine job of letting you know where they are hanging out. Rubbing and scraping activity is continually intensifying, and just about every buck in the woods spends a lot of time and effort leaving his calling card everywhere he can. While his intention is to arrange a "business meeting" with a receptive doe, hunters can also look the buck up and "arrange a blind date with trouble."
Hunting on a budget
By John McAdams
These days it feels like everything is getting more and more expensive. This is especially true for those who enjoy the outdoors. If you're not careful, you can spend a fortune on hunting and fishing gear. While I'm a big proponent of using high-quality gear, you don't necessarily have to spend a ton of money to be properly outfitted. Here are a few tips and tricks I've learned along the way to hunt on a budget.

Our response to the December 2013 Backpage Column
Guns & Ammo
Jim Bequette, editor, of Guns & Ammo Magazine, writes: "As editor of Guns & Ammo, I owe each and every reader a personal apology. No excuses, no backtracking. Dick Metcalf's Backstop column in the December issue has aroused unprecedented controversy. Readers are hopping mad about it, and some are questioning Guns & Ammo's commitment to the Second Amendment. I understand why."
