Number of women getting CHLs doubles
KXAN-TV
Every other Wednesday night Red’s Indoor Gun Range in South Austin is hoppin’. Every bay is usually taken by women. It hasn’t always been this way.
“Every week there would be just me and then one week there would be two of us,” said Nikki Jones who founded Sure Shots, a women’s gun club that got its start back in 2005 when Jones moved from New York to Austin and got her concealed handgun license.
“The difference between the amount of women who were shooting and now is just off the charts,” she said.

Texas Senator proposes new gun law
KXII-TV
If West Texas state Senator Charles Perry gets his way, the minimum caliber gun needed in a concealed handgun license course would decrease from a .32 caliber to a .22 caliber.
"Twenty-two's were excluded for qualifications on CHL purposes," Perry said. "Nobody has actually been able to give a good reason why." Perry said the change could make it easier for women to get their license.

The new Umarex Octane pellet rifle shoots .22 caliber pellets at rimfire speeds with the ReAxis gas piston. These air rifles use the SilencAir system to reduce muzzle noise. Rimfire costs 4x as much as pellets and rimfire availability is still problematic.

Don't believe what you see on TV: Adjust your hunting expectations
By John McAdams
In this age of social media and hunting television shows, many new hunters have pretty unrealistic expectations of how successful they will be during their first few hunting seasons. While there is nothing wrong with having high hopes, many of these new hunters end up discouraged and frustrated because they did not shoot a monster buck in their first couple of hunting seasons. With this in mind, here is how to properly adjust your hunting expectations to avoid experiencing disappointment from failing to achieve an unrealistic goal.
First mule deer season in Lubbock County
Big Country Homepage
Mule deer season begins in Lubbock, Castro and Hale County for the first time ever Nov. 22 through Nov. 29.
"The biologists went out and did a census and survey on the mule deer and they found it was a healthy enough population to be able to hunt," said Texas Parks & Wildlife Warden Aaron Sims.
In order to hunt the mule deer you must make sure you have a hunting license, ask for permission when hunting on private property and after taking the deer you are required to tag it.

Smart guns: Can tech bring transparency to law enforcement?
TechRepublic
We'll probably never know the full story of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri. But what has transpired in the weeks after the tragic event — the protests, the police militarization, the impending court decision — has made problems with law enforcement processes glaringly obvious. Many of those problems relate to authorities having to piece together what occurred through multiple accounts: Who shot whom, from what angle and where, how much time transpired. But with new IoT technology, there may soon be a way to avoid much of the confusion that surrounds officer shootings.

FDIC and DOJ to investigate Operation Choke Point
GUNS
Both the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the Department of Justice will review their involvement in Operation Choke Point, a mass-market fraud prevention initiative that’s caught flak for its expansive list of “high risk” merchants.
The federal agencies agreed to collaborate in response to a letter written by U.S. Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Missouri, and signed by 30 members of congress.
America's favorite deer rifles
American Rifleman
“Deer rifle.” The term doesn’t just roll from the lips. It’s not particularly euphonic — sort of rough, like the people who settled this country. But deer rifles have been a major component of peacetime civilian gun sales for more than a century. Mention the words anywhere in this country, and each individual has a vision of his or her notion of what a deer rifle is.

Nosler Model 48 Patriot review
Rifle Shooter
On the Fourth of July the highways leading into Cincinnati were packed with vehicles, most of them full of families headed to the waterpark or on their way to one of the city’s scattered fireworks displays. But Brad Fitzpatrick was headed against the rush, out into the open fields of Clinton County for a fireworks display of my own. Just behind his seat in the pickup was Nosler’s new Model 48 Patriot rifle, and it was chambered in Nosler’s first branded cartridge: The fire-breathing .26 Nosler.
