Federal government shuts down, travel not affected (yet)

As of midnight on Oct. 1, the federal government was closed for business for the first time in 17 years. The partial government shutdown will affect hundreds of thousands of federal employees, who will be put on furloughs; dozens of government agencies, which will cease operations; and scores of government-run tourist attractions, including the Statue of Liberty, the National Mall and the National Zoo. According to the U.S. Travel Association, the latter could do serious harm to local economies that depend on tourism spending.More

Gas prices fall as weather, output calm markets

Gasoline prices have fallen steadily throughout September, and drivers should look forward to even cheaper fill-ups in the weeks ahead. The national average price for a gallon of gasoline is now $3.42, down from $3.59 on Sept. 1. The price is the lowest it's been at this time of year since 2010 and is likely to keep falling.More
