Texas economic activity again reaches 4-year high

Texas' economic activity level in November spiked to its highest point since 2008 as nearly every indicator showed acceleration, according to Dallas-based Comerica Bank's Texas economic activity index. That's the third month in a row Comerica's Texas index has spiked at its highest point in four years. More

Meetings industry to create messaging

Meetings industry leaders met in Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 15 to begin the process of creating a messaging campaign to promote the value of meetings to the public and government. The campaign will be the next phase of the initiative that published the landmark study in 2011, The Economic Significance of Meetings to the U.S. Economy, which reported the total direct spending associated with U.S. meeting activity in 2009 to be $263 billion. STR: Room revenue rose 6.8 percent at US hotels in 2012

U.S. hotels' revenue per available room in 2012 rose faster than previously estimated, as a combination of a continued recovery in travel demand and virtually no new supply pushed up room rates, Smith Travel Research reported. U.S. RevPAR increased 6.8 percent from a year earlier, up from STR's December forecast of a 6.6 percent increase. U.S. room rates rose 4.2 percent to $106.10, while occupancy advanced 2.5 percentage points to 61.4 percent. Travelers booked 1.09 billion U.S. room nights last year, up 3 percent from 2011 and more than the previous record of 1.03 billion room nights in 2007. More

The family/intergenerational travel trend that emerged following 9/11 is still going strong more than a decade later. About 44 percent of adults bring children (and grandchildren) along on leisure travels, and taken as a group, they take more trips per year (4.5) than business travelers (3.9), Gen Y (3.9) or Gen X travelers (3.5), according to the 2012 Portrait of American Travelers (MMGY Global/Harrison Group).
