Texas House speaker calls for end to state highway fund diversions

House Speaker Joe Straus, R-San Antonio, said that the Texas House would propose a budget next year that uses all of the money allotted to the state highway fund for transportation. The fuel tax and other fees, such as drivers' license fees, are routed to the highway fund. But Straus pointed out that for almost 80 years some of that money has instead gone to help fund agencies that are not directly related to transportation, such as state troopers.

American, Southwest see strong start to summer travel
American Airlines Group Inc. and Southwest Airlines Co. forecast a strong summer travel season, a pivotal period for the industry when vacationers join business fliers to pack planes to their fullest. American said second-quarter revenue for each seat flown a mile, an indicator of traffic and fares, will exceed the projection it gave just last month. Southwest Chief Executive Officer Gary Kelly told employees he expects "great" seasonal travel.

DFW Airport emerging as international hub

In the last five years, DFW Airport has added two dozen international destinations, including Rio de Janeiro, Dubai and Sydney. International airlines such as Qantas, Emirates and Qatar Airways, which will launch flights to Doha in July, have added operations at DFW. And in the fall, the world’s largest passenger jet, the A380, will be used on routes to Australia and the Middle East.

TripAdvisor's latest air travel survey highlights favorite technologies
TripAdvisor's now-annual survey of air travelers has revealed which travel technologies respondents are most appreciative of. The survey asked 4,300 U.S. travelers about the state of air travel, with 93 percent of respondents saying they will take at least one domestic flight in 2014. This is up from 89 percent last year, and also includes a boost in international travel: 63 percent are taking flights abroad this year, with only 55 percent saying so last year.

Although overall U.S. exports fell in April, travel exports rose, according to the U.S. Travel Association, which released its analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce's latest report on international trade.

Hotels expand mobile check-in options

Already available at a smattering of brands and individual hotels, mobile hotel check-in is poised for rapid expansion this year across the industry. While check-in kiosks and other methods of avoiding the front desk line in recent years have become more commonplace at hotels, integration of mobile technology into the travel process is spurring greater adoption across some major hotel brands. At the same time, some third-party technology suppliers are providing tools for hotels and distributors to offer mobile check-in.
