Travel industry achieved trade surplus in April

The travel industry continues to outperform the rest of the U.S. economy in the area of international trade, according to the U.S. Travel Association, which released an industry analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s latest trade report. According to that report, the U.S. trade deficit increased by $3.2 billion in April, reaching $40.3 billion as a $2.2 billion increase in U.S. exports was offset by a $5.4 billion increase in imports.

Exhibition industry reports positive but modest growth

The exhibition industry grew for the 11th consecutive quarter in the first quarter of 2013, although it grew slower than the overall U.S. economy, according to the Center for Exhibition Industry Research, which yesterday released the first-quarter results of its CEIR Index research report. According to the report, the exhibition industry grew 1.3 percent in the first quarter while real GDP grew 1.8 percent, which is a "modest acceleration" from the fourth quarter, when industry growth totaled just 0.9 percent.
