Behind the US summer traveler's search for value

Travelers hitting the road this summer want value, according to Tracy Paurowski, director of public affairs for American Express Travel. Americans expect to spend $1,246 per person this year (up from $1,145 in 2013), and prioritizing perks over price is one trend driving this increase, she said.

Texas Fourth of July travel increasing despite gas costs

Despite the highest Independence Day gas prices since 2008, holiday travel is on the rise in Texas, according to a projection by AAA. Of the estimated 3 million travelers in Texas this Fourth of July, 2.5 million will reach their destinations by automobile, a 2.9 percent increase from last year.

Southwest Airlines goes international

From its Texas beginnings 43 years ago, Southwest Airlines Co. has grown to be the largest domestic carrier in the United States. But it has never flown to an airport outside the U.S. On Tuesday, that changed. The Dallas-based carrier launched flights to the Bahamas, Aruba and Jamaica. It adds flights to Cancún and Los Cabos, Mexico, on Aug. 10, and Mexico City and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, on Nov. 2.

Can American Airlines double?

American Airlines is flush with plans and accomplishments including a recently completed merger with US Airways, a brand new operations center to be built in the Dallas/Fort Worth area by 2015, and purchase orders submitted for at least 42 new 787 Dreamliners. Management says it is emerging from its recently completed bankruptcy in a position to take on the world. But for investors, the key question is can American Airlines double within a reasonable time frame?

Houston ranks No. 1 in the country for fastest growth in foreign visitors

Houston saw the largest increase in overseas visitors of any U.S. city between 2012 and 2013, according to a Commerce Department report. Approximately 801,000 foreign travelers came to Houston in 2013, up 22 percent from 2012. The report by the National Travel and Tourism Office of the Commerce Department excludes travelers from Canada and Mexico.
