US Airways shareholders OK American Airlines merger

US Airways shareholders have approved the pending merger with American Airlines, a step that moves it closer to becoming the largest carrier in the world. US Airways CEO Doug Parker announced the approval at the airline's annual meeting of stockholders.

Southwest Airlines offers fliers free in-flight TV

Southwest Airlines is letting passengers watch TV for free on their personal devices when they fly on the carrier's Wi-Fi enabled planes. As part of the "TV Flies Free" offer, satellite TV provider Dish network will offer customers 14 live TV channels and up to 75 on-demand shows on the airline's more than 425 Wi-Fi equipped planes, about 75 percent of its fleet. Previously, the service cost $5.

Drivers may see more pain at the pump as gas prices jump

Taking that affordable summer road trip, or just driving around town to do errands, might suddenly be a budget buster. The national average for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline hit $3.61 on July 15, according to AAA. That's up 14 cents from a week ago, and the largest price spike since February, said AAA spokesman Michael Green.

Tablets grab significant share of travel traffic

Mobile traffic is becoming increasingly significant for the travel industry, and hotels in particular. Google predicted that U.S. hotel searches would be up 24 percent in 2013 overall, but that includes a 68 percent uptick in searches from mobile devices against a 4 percent decrease in desktop queries. Searches from tablets, in particular, were expected to increase by 180 percent.

It's summertime, and the livin' is easy. 'Tis the season for exotic trips, fun in the sun and raining out-of-office replies. Nothing says I am on vacation like an automatic response. Of course, it serves its purpose — but have you ever thought it could even do your job while you are gone? While the standard auto-response — "I am currently out of the office until Monday, July 22, and will respond to your message upon my return." — delivers the message, it also turns on the snooze button.
