After Friday's report that the economy grew at a 2 percent annual rate in the third quarter, what does the current quarter hold? And how about 2013? The answer depends on who's right about the economy, and especially the so-called "fiscal cliff" looming at year's end. Executives who invest in software, equipment and office space are pulling back, worried about how Washington will settle the standoff over deficit-reducing tax hikes and spending cuts. Consumers, who are spending more on houses and cars, appear to think Washington will reach some agreement, if it's on their minds at all. More

Approximately 3/4 of US travelers sharing trip experiences on social networks

TripAdvisor, the world's largest travel site, announced the results of its social media travel survey of more than 1,700 U.S. respondents. The findings reveal a strong correlation between social media and travel, as 76 percent said they share travel experiences via social networks. Forty-two percent use social channels for travel planning, while 40 percent do so for travel inspiration. Sixty-four percent most often refer to a travel research site such as TripAdvisor for travel inspiration. More

Southwest Airlines to take over more AirTran routes

Southwest Airlines will take over routes from AirTran Airways in four cities next April as Southwest continues to combine the two airlines. Southwest said that AirTran will end several nonstop routes to and from Charlotte, N.C.; Flint, Mich.; Rochester, N.Y.; and Portland, Maine, on April 13. More

Galveston reports record $8.4 million in tourism revenue

Galveston had a record $8.4 million in peak-season tourism revenue this year in a continuing turnaround since Hurricane Ike battered the Southeast Texas island. The Galveston County Daily-News reported that officials believe a $100,000 marketing campaign called "It's Island Time" contributed to the increase. The Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier also opened this year. More
