House backs giving clothing abandoned at airports to homeless veterans

Clothing left behind at airport security checkpoints would be turned over for distribution to homeless veterans under a bill passed by the House. Under the Clothe a Homeless Hero Act, the Transportation Security Administration and Veterans Affairs Department would partner with local veterans organizations and charities to distribute abandoned clothing to homeless veterans and their families. Sponsor Rep. Kathy Hochul, D-N.Y., has said the idea arose when she left a scarf behind when going through screening earlier this year. More

Airlines expect to carry about 3.6 billion passengers in 2016, exceeding 2011's passenger load by more than 800 million, according to new data. The International Air Transport Association has released a report projecting 5.3 percent average annual growth in passenger numbers between 2012 and 2016. Almost 500 million of those new passengers will travel on domestic routes while 331 million will travel internationally. More

FCC calls for greater use of electronic devices in-flight

The Federal Communications Commission says travelers should be able to have greater use of portable electronic devices during flights. In a letter obtained by The Hill, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski called on the Federal Aviation Administration to "enable greater use of tablets, e-readers, and other portable devices" during flights. The letter was sent to Michael Huerta, the acting administrator of the FAA. The FCC Chairman was not specific in her letter, though, and stopped short of saying that passengers should be allowed to talk on their cellphone during take-off and landing. More
