Texas shows strong job gains, but lead narrows

Texas continued to add jobs in December — and saw strong growth all of last year — but at a slower pace than in 2012. Texas employers added 17,600 jobs last month, following the national trend of slower job growth at year's end, according to information released by the Texas Workforce Commission. The agency also revised November's job gain downward to 20,400 from 28,700.

Southwest announces first international flights

Southwest, which grew to carry more domestic passengers than any U.S. airline, began selling tickets Monday for international flights, the start of a significant shift for the low-cost domestic carrier. Starting July 1, travelers will for the first time be able to fly Southwest to Aruba, Jamaica and the Bahamas, setting up stiff competition with larger carriers that serve those areas now, analysts say.

Consumer confidence upbeat on outlook

Good news as 2014 starts. Consumer confidence advanced in January for the second consecutive month, said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at the Conference Board. "All in all, confidence appears to be back on track and rising expectations suggest the economy may pick up some momentum in the months ahead,” Franco says.

Judge strikes New Braunfels 'can ban'

A judge has struck down an ordinance the Hill Country city of New Braunfels adopted that banned disposable food and beverage containers. State District Court Judge Don Burgess sided with a beer distributor and others in ruling that New Braunfels doesn't have the jurisdiction to regulate disposable items.
