Labor Day travel to hit four-year high

Travel club AAA is projecting that 34.1 million Americans will travel over this Labor Day weekend, the most since the midst of the recession. The number of Americans using the holiday for a getaway at least 50 miles from home represents a 4.2 percent increase over the 32.7 million who traveled during the Labor Day weekend in 2012. And it's the highest number of travelers since 2009, when 31.3 million Americans took a holiday break in the midst of the economic downturn.

Forecast: Lodging fees to reach $2.1 billion in 2013

U.S. hotels collected a record $2 billion in total fees and surcharges last year — and they're on track to set another record this year, according to an analysis published by New York University's School of Continuing and Professional Studies. The analysis, conducted by Dr. Bjorn Hanson, divisional dean of the Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism and Sports Management, forecasts a new record of $2.1 billion in fees and surcharges for U.S. hotels in 2013, up from $1 billion 10 years ago, in 2003.

Mintel: Teen theme park visitation on the decline

As a new school year looms on the horizon, many American households might be trying to squeeze in one last trip to the amusement park before it's time to hit the books. But when it comes to theme parks, new research from Mintel reveals that while teens are still the most prolific visitors, teen visitation has dropped over the past five years with 67 percent of those ages 12-17 having visited a park in the last year compared with 76 percent five years ago. In contrast, visits from adults have remained steady at 22-23 percent.
