PONY CLUB'S INSIDE TURNS

Have A Safe, Happy And Healthy Summer
Many parts of our country are suffering from the effects of violent storms including property destruction from high winds and flooding. Other sections are suffering from fires storms. The following newsletter, published by The Equestrian Medical Safety Association, an organization dedicated to the philosophy, principals and application of safety of people in equestrian activities, has some excellent articles on how to deal with these adverse conditions.

Beginning on page four of the newsletter is an article about how to develop a step-by-step disaster plan for you and your horses. It lists items to be kept in an emergency kit as well as items to be kept in your own veterinary first aid kit. Page 10 has an excellent article on emergency concussion management. There are many other useful articles and editorials in this issue that you may find of further interest including an editorial on page 12 by Dru Malavase, a USPC Legend and past Safety Chair, about protective head gear.

Nutritional Notes
Sponsored by Triple Crown Nutrition
Question: I have a 20-year-old Morgan/Welsh cross mare who is partially retired due to a shoulder injury. She is OK with small (light riders) in the arena so she does not get a lot of conditioning work.

She is also a very easy keeper. She is kept at grass and gets two cups of an easy keeper pelleted feed once a day in which I mix her supplements. During the winter she is fed a great grass hay I buy from a neighbor plus her supplements. She is not obese, but she is not fit. Any suggestions for maintaining a healthy weight for her? She has never foundered or coliced in the seven years I have had her.

Turn Feed Bags Into Money Bags
What can you do with an empty feed bag? Well, like many horse folks, you could reuse them as trash receptacles in the tack room. Or, you could cut out the brown paper inner lining and use them as poultice wraps (many of you are smiling now because you've done this). And some creative types might repurpose them as clever gift wrap for horsey friends — with baling twine "ribbon," of course!

But many of you may not know about another, more profitable way to use empty feed bags, that is, if they are Southern States®, Legends® or Triple Crown® feed bags from a Southern States location: Turn them into cash!
