Equine internal parasite control is changing drastically from the days of rotational deworming to a targeted or strategic deworming program. The evolution in this methodology is being driven by increasing resistance to our parasiticide agents and a greater understanding of parasite management through fecal testing.
Topics for this discussion:
- Equine parasites of greatest importance will be identified, noting key life cycle facts
- Current fecal testing methods will be reviewed and guidance on how to interpret the results
- Deworming product classes and corresponding product names
- How to move from rotational deworming to strategic deworming
- Are all horses treated the same?
- Does one program fit all farms/ranches/boarding barns?
- Review of management practices that reduce parasite exposure and re-infection
Be sure to join us for Deworming 101 New Strategies-Preparing for the Future Webinar, September 20th, 2016 at 8pm Eastern Time.

By Yvette Seger, Chair, USPC Strategic Planning Committee
A strategic plan is a tool that organizations use to set priorities, focus the efforts of staff and volunteers, and guide progress towards the attainment of common goals. In 2015, USPC’s Strategic Planning Committee guided a holistic review of Pony Club’s current programs and materials, a process that identified organizational strengths, opportunities for growths, and gaps to fill to improve member and volunteer experience. During this process, Pony Club leaders, members, and staff were asked for their thoughts on the following questions:
- How would you describe the Pony Club “product”?
- What do you think Pony Club does best?
- Why do you continue to volunteer your time to Pony Club?
- What to you wish Pony Club offered?
- How would you describe a “successful” Pony Club experience?
Following several months of consultation, responses to these questions were categorized into five areas identified as core organizational values and the framework for Pony Club’s five-year strategic plan, USPC 2020:
- Our Education
- Our People
- Our Safety
- Our Sport
- Our Networks and Communications
Within each area, a series of short- and long-term goals. These strategic goals are intended to be trans-organizational and reflect the core values and participation life-cycle of our members. They reflect current areas of organizational strength, areas requiring additional development, and opportunities for USPC expansion or collaboration.
Over the next few weeks, we will highlight each of the five strategic areas and their short- and long-term goals. Every Pony Club member, leader, and volunteer plays a critical role in our organizational success, and we hope that you will take a few minutes to review the strategic plan and discuss it with your clubs, center, and regions. Similarly, please feel free to share any feedback you have with the Strategic Planning Committee!

In 2017, Canada will host the annual International Games Competition, which rotates between the US, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. More information will be available once an actual invitation is received.
The Regional Supervisor may nominate as many applications as he/she has for consideration. If a region has more than one applicant, the RS may rank order his/her applicants when submitting the regional applications. This ordering shall be based on any criteria the RS wishes to apply, and shall be at the sole discretion of the RS. The nominated candidates shall not be made aware of their rank, unless the RS wishes to divulge that information.
The Selection Committee will keep all information received strictly confidential. The RS will forward their nominations to Erin@ponyclub.org prior to the applicant submitting their application. The RS, DC/CA and other recommendation forms will be available online also.
The remainder of the application process is to be produced by the candidates. This year the application will be an online application and the riding video can be done on You Tube, so that everything is electronic. The online application may also be downloaded and mailed to the National Office. Riding videos shall show the skills as detailed in the current USPC Games Handbook and Rules for Games Competition. The same information is also available on the USPC website.
Applications are being accepted now. Please encourage any Pony Club members who wish to be on the team to work on their applications so that they may be received by the Selection Committee in a timely fashion. The deadline for receipt of applications is October 15th, 2016, with November 1st being the target to announce team selection. Applications received after October 15th, may not be accepted.
Send the written applications and You Tube links to: Erin@ponyclub.org.

Have you ever wondered why horses behave a certain way? Are you curious about how different approaches to horse care might affect your horse’s health or performance? Do you have questions about how or why certain horse management practices are preferred over others? Are you always looking for ways to incorporate your love for horses into your school assignments? If you answered “YES!” to any of these questions, then the Pony Club Research Project Fair – held annually during the USPC Equine Symposium and Convention - is the opportunity for you! This webinar will provide an overview of USPC’s Research Project Fair, including expectations for the different project categories, submitting your entry, and tips for making your project stand out to the judges.
About the Presenter
Yvette Seger is an HA graduate of Lake Shore Pony Club, and currently serves the USPC organization as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, a Chief Horse Management Judge, member of the Eventing Committee, resource to the Horse Management Committee, and Horsemasters member. In her non-Pony Club life, Yvette is the Director of Science Policy for the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, a coalition of 30 scientific societies that represents over 125,000 biological researchers in the development of public policy and advocacy activities. After putting her riding career on hold for several years to pursue her doctorate and attain gainful employment, Yvette returned to eventing with her own Finders Keepers, a 14 hand "super pony" that she currently events at the training level and the somewhat retired Roger Rabbit, a 27-year-old thoroughbred who is destined for sainthood. When she’s not at the office, judging horse management, or competing, Yvette avidly pursues her unhealthy relationship with bacon and other pork products, all for the sake of "research."
