Southampton big on deer hunting, except when it comes to muzzleloaders
Roanoke Times
Last hunting season, Southampton reported a deer kill of 5,600, which ranked it fifth in the state. Every year, an impressive number of bucks from the county score well in the Virginia's Big Game Trophy Show. A deer hunter's paradise? Not if you are a muzzleloader hunter. Southampton is the only county in Virginia that blocks hunters from participating in the popular black-powder season, which accounted for 22 percent of Virginia's deer kill last season — 53,650 deer.

UN Arms Trade Treaty takes leap toward entry into force
The Virginia Gazette
The U.N. Arms Trade Treaty took a major step forward on its eventual entry into force recently as 18 countries, including five of the world's top 10 arms exporters, delivered proof of its ratification to the United Nations. Exactly one year ago, the 193-member U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved the treaty, which aims to regulate the $85 billion arms industry and to keep weapons out of the hands of human rights abusers and criminals.

Polls show most Americans see through the gun control spin
NSSF
Gun control advocates are often quoted in media accounts as saying that the vast majority of Americans are in favor of stricter gun control laws before they spin off onto the particular "commonsense" new law they are espousing that day from that organization. Leaving aside the often dubious sources they cite, we are in a mid-term election year for Congress and many states have gubernatorial elections.

Witaschek surrenders to DC police 'Gun Offenders Registry'
The Washington Times
Mark Witaschek never had a firearm in the District of Columbia, but he is now on the city's Gun Offenders Registry. This bizarre case has drawn national attention because an upstanding citizen was tried and convicted of possessing unregistered ammunition for muzzleloader bullets, which are simply pieces of lead and copper.

Comparing murder rates and gun ownership across countries
Crime Prevention Research Center
Charles Blow in the New York Times last year made the very common argument: "America has the highest gun homicide rate, the highest number of guns per capita . . . ." In another story, the New York Times quotes researcher David Hemenway as claiming: "Generally, if you live in a civilized society, more guns mean more death." CNN's Piers Morgan believes: "America has the worst incidents of gun murders of any of what they call the civilized world." Bloomberg's Businessweek also made similar claims this spring. The one common feature for these claims is that they rely on the Small Arms Survey.

It's time to find common ground on Sunday hunting
The Virginian-Pilot
As an outdoorsman who doesn't fish as often as he'd like, and one who would love to increase his hunting opportunities, it's painful to watch what has been happening in the hunting community. With increasing pressure from outside organizations to curtail — or even put an end to — hunting, it seems obvious that all hunters would want to stand united.

Machine guns and public television
Shall Not Be Questioned
"Bitter in Shooting" posted on Shall Not Be Questioned: "I noticed a story about a Friends of NRA event in the Midwest that gave donors the opportunity to shoot one of the Gatling guns that Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders used at San Juan Hill plus some machine guns, and I had to say that I'm impressed a public television program actually aired the event in Milwaukee."

Americans with guns are more responsible than government
Pine River Times
Do you believe the American government wants its citizens to own guns? How about the United Nations, do they want the American people armed? The government and the national media are always trying to divide the American people. Here's just one example: "We are told NOT to judge ALL Muslims by the actions of a few lunatics." But, "We are encouraged TO judge ALL gun owners by the actions of a few lunatics."
