Franklin County marksmanship team places first nationally
The Roanoke Times
Nine members of the eagle-eyed air-rifle marksmanship team from Franklin County High School "kicked butt" during three national shooting competitions that began recently in Alabama , said retired Air Force Lt. Col. Tracey Carter, the squad's coach. Competing in Anniston against other teenagers, the Franklin County team took first place in the first-ever all-club national tournament organized by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. It also took first place in the Junior Olympics competition. The team placed second during a competition sponsored by the National Rifle Association.

Gun Geo Marker app tries to locate homes, businesses of gun owners

A new Android app asks users to expose the home addresses of gun owners they deem "potentially unsafe" — and share that information with the world. The Gun Geo Marker app, released to Google's Play app store on July 7, invites users to mark the homes and businesses of "suspected unsafe gun owners ... to help others in the area learn about their geography of risk from gun accidents or violence. "The app bills itself as merely a tool to collect information, but it was hit with a firestorm of negative reviews and comments from people worried that it could do more harm than good.

Democratic aide brings gun into courthouse, receives ticket

An aide to Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., got off with a warning after illegally bringing a gun into a public building. Security officers at a federal building in downtown Detroit found a gun in the purse of Betty Petrenz, Conyers' office manager. Bringing weapons into government buildings is strictly forbidden, but Petrenz received no sentence or formal punishment. Just a ticket, which will be stricken from her record if she demonstrates good behavior.

Is online gun training OK? States split

Colorado passed legislation outlawing all-online gun-safety training for concealed-carry permits; lawmakers in Oregon are trying to do the same. Virginia passed a 2009 law permitting online training. Should gun owners have to show they know how to use a gun safely before being granted a concealed-carry permit? A just-passed Colorado law says yes and has banned online-only training for permits. Some other states say getting trained online is just fine.
