President Barack Obama again stated that he is not out to take people's guns. "Some of you are watching certain television stations or listening to certain radio programs. Please do not believe this notion that somehow I'm out to take everyone's guns away," he told the International Association of Chiefs of Police. He went on to claim that his proposals would protect the lives of law enforcement and held up Chicago's gun laws as the reason that national laws should be tightened

NRA Board Members Tim Knight and Sean Maloney are traveling Virginia, talking one-on-one with voters about next week's elections and working to turn out the pro-rights vote in Virginia's 10th State Senate District. They stopped by the Farmville studio of NRANews and told Cam Edwards that many voters they speak with are aware of Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun spending in the state. While not discounting the affect that such a large dump of money can have, they told Cam that nothing replaces the personal engagement of knocking on doors.

You may recall earlier posts on this blog about the plight of NOVA Firearms when they attempted to move to a larger location in Arlington, then after their landlord canceled their lease, they found another location in Fairfax, not far from the location from which they were trying to move. As they planned to open, protests flared because the new location was near a school. New information has been discovered that shows a member of the Fairfax Board of Supervisors was behind the original protests in Arlington, then again in Fairfax.

A coalition of nine police organizations announced on Oct. 26 that they are calling on Congress to require background checks on all firearm purchases. Leaders of the law enforcement groups made the call at the annual International Association of Chiefs of Police conference the day before hundreds of police chiefs and sheriffs were to hear from President Barack Obama, who has vowed to be more forceful in his push to bolster U.S. gun laws.

The Washington Post reported results of a new Post/ABC News Poll that shows respondants overwhelmingly (63 percent to 23 percent) say mass shootings reflect problems identifying and treating people with mental health problems rather than inadequate gun control laws. There does seem to be a disconnect between that view and whether new gun laws should be a priority, however.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch recently came out with their editorial endorsements for the Nov. 3 General Election and Glen Sturtevant was one of the beneficiaries.

One of Gov. Terry McAuliffe's new gun-control directives that would have police trace every firearm used in a crime is essentially already being done, either through the state's 22-year-old Criminal Firearms Clearinghouse or law enforcement participation in the federal Electronic Tracing System. Notwithstanding the directive, Virginia has the largest law enforcement participation rate of any state in the interagency sharing of data on recovered crime guns and investigative traces of those weapons.

Bearing Arms
Reflexes are standard equipment on all normal human bodies and serve valuable survival functions. Sometimes they are even a bit humorous, such as when the doctor uses that little rubber hammer to make your leg flop around. However, among all your body's other involuntary physical responses there is one reflex that has tremendous bearing on defensive firearms useage: the sympathetic squeeze reflex or, more properly, inter-limb interaction.

The Washington Post takes a deeper look into the huge sums of money Mike Bloomberg is dumping into the Virginia races, and finds that one of his big ad buys isn't even about the gun issue. One is a race baiting ad that has nothing to do with guns at all, but rather a local school district issue. Moreover, the ad misleads the reader into believing Glen Sturtevant himself is being sued, when it is actually the school board being sued.

I have always been somewhat skeptical when I've heard stories of rounds detonating in the ejection port — no longer. In the past, a common response to the slide of a pistol failing to go into battery was striking the rear of the slide. However, as we see in the following case, that may not be a good idea and indeed could be dangerous. I was conducting our monthly Short Range Match when I heard a loud pop instead of a bang as a competitor was completing a stage.

A hunt is made up of many parts, and hopefully culminates in the crisp break of a trigger. Although the shot is a small part of the overall hunt, it is arguably the most critical one, the deciding factor between relief and heartbreak. Occasionally, a perfect shot is presented, with plenty of time, and a rock-solid rest. However in my experience, many shot opportunities aren't so perfect. Sometimes a shot needs to be executed quickly, often with an improvised rest. If you're prepared for that, you'll be the one grinding meat rather than telling tales of the one that got away.

American Hunter
For decades deer hunters have used deer urine and other scent-based products to lure bucks into range for a shot. At least three generations of hunters have reached into their coat pocket, pulled out a small bottle of the often foul smelling fluid and dribbled it on the ground and vegetation. Unfortunately, everything is not rosy in the world of cervid secretions.
