WCAI to Hold a Webinar on 3G/4G DAS Solutions
WCAI
Wireless operators are confronted with meeting the high demand for indoor mobile broadband data. The advancements of smartphones, data modems and various mobile applications are driving operators to expand street level coverage indoors in a timely and cost-effective manner. WCAI will hold a webinar to highlight WCAI member CommScope's ability to deliver robust in-building coverage in a single or multi-operator environment. The ION-B fiber-based DAS system will be presented for its advantages in helping multiple wireless operators deploy their existing 3G and expanding 4G services. The webinar — "3G/4G DAS Solutions — Introduction to CommScope's ION-B — a fiber based Distributed Antenna System" — will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, at 4 p.m. EDT. It is free of charge and open to the public. Register now!More
AT&T's LTE Network Tested in U.S.
GSMArena
Tests performed on WCAI member AT&T's brand new LTE network using the HTC Jetstream 4G, one of their first LTE-enabled gadgets, showed impressive results: 22 Mbps peak download with 18-19 Mbps on average and 6 Mbps peak about 5 Mbps average. Not bad for a real-world performance, and LTE has plenty of room to upgrade (up to 100 Mbps download was promised).More
NTT DoCoMo Offers Tablets on LTE Network in Japan
PCWorld
NTT DoCoMo said Thursday it will offer two tablets on its high-speed LTE network, along with streaming video from Hulu's new Japan service. The country's largest mobile operator said it will sell the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and a new waterproof tablet from Fujitsu called the Arrows Tab from October. Both will run on its heavily promoted "Xi" network, pronounced "Crossy," which is advertised as having download speeds of up to 75 Mbps, though it has been significantly lower in practice. DoCoMo launched its LTE offering late last year, the first company to do so in Japan, and these will be the first tablets on the network.More
LightSquared May Degrade Hurricane Tracking in U.S.
Bloomberg
LightSquared wireless service needs more testing because it may degrade precision services that track hurricanes, guide farmers and help build flood defenses, U.S. agencies told Congress today. LightSquared's signals may disrupt precise gear that reads data from the satellite-based Global Positioning System, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Department of Transportation and a federal advisory body said in testimony prepared for a hearing by the House science committee. Concerns include LightSquared's potential effect on a satellite system that increases accuracy of hurricane tracking, Mary Glackin, a deputy under secretary at NOAA, said in the testimony. Glack said options for mitigating interference would be limited because the GPS satellites are in orbit and cannot be modified.More
BATS and DragonWave Develop Massive-Capacity, Auto Aiming & Tracking Wireless Systems
DragonWave
Broadband Antenna Tracking Systems and WCAI member DragonWave announced the successful integration of BATS' automatic antenna aiming and tracking technology with DragonWave's Horizon packet microwave solutions. The integrated system offers great benefits to industries such as oil and gas exploration, emergency response and the military, where operational environments lack infrastructure and are often in remote or environmentally hostile locations, and allows for more streamlined communication and data-management processes.More

Study: 4G Small Cells Industry Poised for Takeoff in H2 2012
Maravedis
The small-cell industry is rapidly maturing, motivated by a data-driven capacity crunch and increasingly widespread advances in LTE deployments. Maravedis forecasts that the pico and carrier femto small-cell market, dominated by 4G small cells, will begin to grow in earnest in mid-to-late 2012, with rapid uptake in 2013 into 2014. The small cell market is expected to reach $5 billion worldwide by 2014, approaching maturation in 2016. Maravedis sees carrier Wi-Fi, carrier femto and pico cells co-existing as complimentary technologies not only in the short term but in the long term, with anticipated future advances in silicon breaking down the distinctions between carrier femto cells and pico cells in two to three years.More
