Deadline for Columbia's 2.5GHz spectrum auction extended TeleGeography Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Colombia's ICT ministry has pushed back the deadline for those operators interested in the auction of up to 60MHz of spectrum in the 2.5GHz-2.69GHz band by a month until May 7. The Taiwan government is likely to assign the frequency band between 698MHz and 806MHz -- the 700MHz band -- for LTE operation in the future, industry sources quoted officials of the National Communications Commission as indicating. A large portion of this band has been in use by military and police organizations and it will take about three years for them to shift to other bands and make way for LTE operation, the sources said. The government will then take one to two years to release LTE licenses and licensees will need two more years to construct infrastructure, with LTE operation possibly beginning in 2016, the sources said. Belgium's Mobistar trialling LTE; will increase 3G download speed by summer TeleGeography Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Belgium's second largest mobile network operator by subscribers, Mobistar, has reportedly been trialing LTE services since the beginning of April, according to Datanews.be. The tests are being carried out by a team from parent company France Telecom, which already has experience with LTE trials. The first tests apparently managed to record downlinks speeds of 60Mbps. Mobistar was issued a license to trial LTE services by the Belgian Institute for Post and Telecommunications back in March 2010. Meanwhile, Benoit Scheen, Mobistar's CEO, revealed that the cellco is also aiming to boost the download speeds available over its 3G network. Mexican cableco Megacable has reportedly pulled out of the country's wireless spectrum auction, stating that having re-examined its options, a move to launch its own mobile network would make little financial sense. According to Bloomberg Business Week, the operator is instead reconsidering the possibility of launching a wireless service via a mobile virtual network operator arrangement, with Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica's local subsidiary Movistar Mexico mooted as one potential partner; back in February 2010 Megacable COO Raymundo Fernandez suggested that his company would "most probably" select Telefonica for a reseller deal if it was not to bid for wireless frequencies. Pernec Corp Bhd is creating a new revenue stream from its payphones business with its newly-launched innovative eRas. Its managing director, Abdul Karim Abdul Sallam, said, eRas, an extended radio access system service, was a rebranded WiWi (hybrid between the WiFi and WiMAX solutions) technology platform.
