4G Defined: WiMAX and LTE Don't Qualify InfoWorld Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Neither WiMAX nor LTE qualify as 4G technologies, according to the International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R). The group announced it had finished its assessment of submissions for the 4G standard, also called IMT-Advanced. Based on that group's decision, to really be selling 4G, carriers will have to get going with one of two future technologies, called LTE-Advanced and WirelessMAN-Advanced. Regulators around the world are failing to allocate harmonized spectrum for 4G services, Yankee Group said in a report. It said that the lack of harmonization is hurting prospects for device economies of scale, carrier competitiveness, and global data roaming. "If these trends continue, vendors will not be able to make devices that work everywhere and consumers will not easily roam across networks when traveling to different countries," said Ken Rehbehn, principal analyst at Yankee Group and author of the report. "This greatly threatens 4G's success, since roaming revenue will fall and consumers will seek alternatives, like Wi-Fi." More Previous editions of WCAI's 4G Global Update are

Spectrum bands such as 2.5-2.6, 2.3 and 3.4-3.6 GHz increasingly serve as global bands for broadband wireless services. Globally harmonized spectrum, flexible use, consistent regulatory treatment and interoperability are required for such bands to achieve this potential. To advance this goal, the Wireless Communications Association International (WCAI) created the Global Development Committee (GDC) for service providers. This newsletter advances GDC's work by keeping opinion leaders abreast of worldwide developments.
