Through this deal Greenpacket is said to have consolidated its position well in the African WiMAX space. Infonetics Research's analyst Stêphane Têral said, the global 2G/3G/4G infrastructure market declined 10.7 percent to $42.4 billion in 2010, dragged down by 2G, but is expected to rebound by 9.7 percent this year, driven by large-scale 2G capacity upgrades, 2G network modernization and 3G coverage optimization. Austin, Texas-based IT provider Alepo announced recently that it would partner with a Kenyan telecommunications service in constructing a 4G network, says the San Francisco Chronicle. The aptly named Safaricom is the sole provider of 3G services in Kenya, and serves a clientele of 14 million. Alepo will implement Safaricom's 16e AAA and DHCP servers as part of its WiMAX network. Alepo will also centralize Safaricom's CRM system, allowing management of WiMAX and GSM networks from one location. Japanese telecom operator KDDI and regional offshoot Okinawa Cellular Telephone will launch Japan's first smartphone compatible with WiMAX technology. The phone — the EVO WiMAX ISW11HT, made by HTC — will be unveiled after the first half of April 2011. The new smartphone, which uses the Android operating system, also works as a wireless router and can connect up to eight devices through either 3G or WiMAX.
