Regulator poised to launch WiMAX spectrum auction in Nepal

The Nepal Telecommunications Authority is gearing up for an auction of 2.3 GHz and 3.3 GHz spectrum for WiMAX-based technologies, according to the Kathmandu Post. The NTA is expected to issue request for proposal to operators interested in providing voice and high-speed Internet services even in remote areas of the mountain kingdom. The watchdog already has set aside 30 MHz of spectrum to state-owned incumbent operator Nepal Telecom, which will not have to compete for the frequencies. More

Aviat Networks announces sale of WiMAX business to EION Wireless

Aviat Networks announced that it has sold its WiMAX business to EION Networks, which is a privately owned Canadian company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. The WiMAX business will be consolidated into a division of the company, EION Wireless, as a result of the sale. "The sale of the WiMAX business will enable us to better focus our resources and investments on our microwave transmission products, further positioning us for long-term success," said Michael Pangia, president and CEO of Aviat Networks. According to the White House, wireless will be an element in the new $400 billion American Jobs Act that President Barack Obama proposed in his speech recently. The new jobs package reaffirms the administration's support for the auction of wireless airwaves volunteered by broadcasters. By the White House's measure, that could pay down the deficit by as much as $18 billion while still generating $10 billion in additional funds for a public safety network. More
