The Nepal Telecommunications Authority is gearing up for an auction of 2.3 GHz and 3.3 GHz spectrum for WiMAX-based technologies, according to the Kathmandu Post. The NTA is expected to issue request for proposal to operators interested in providing voice and high-speed Internet services even in remote areas of the mountain kingdom. The watchdog already has set aside 30 MHz of spectrum to state-owned incumbent operator Nepal Telecom, which will not have to compete for the frequencies. Aviat Networks announced that it has sold its WiMAX business to EION Networks, which is a privately owned Canadian company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. The WiMAX business will be consolidated into a division of the company, EION Wireless, as a result of the sale. "The sale of the WiMAX business will enable us to better focus our resources and investments on our microwave transmission products, further positioning us for long-term success," said Michael Pangia, president and CEO of Aviat Networks.
