Hiking in your own backyard

You don't need a car or a state Discover Pass to go for a great fall hike in Seattle. The City of Seattle has 60 parks with trails in them, totally 120 miles of hiking in the city. Seattle Parks and Recreation trails coordinator Chukundi Salisbury said hiking was the No. 1 most-popular activity on a recent survey of activities in Seattle parks.

At Hanford meeting, caution urged to protect land

A draft community plan to open more of Hanford to recreational use got a generally warm reception at a community meeting in Kennewick. But many participants were clear that plans need to proceed carefully to make sure that the shrub steppe land, some of it largely untouched for 70 years, is protected from human abuse.

If you are looking for any or all of these, then make sure your community becomes part of the Tree City USA program. There are currently 82 Tree City USA cities in Washington ranging in size from the Town of Hunts Point (390 people) to Seattle (over 608,000).

If you are one of the 82 Tree Cities, congratulations! If you are a former Tree City who may have let their status lapse, we'd love to have you back! If you are new to the program, welcome!

Snowshoers enjoy new trail bridges over Mount Spokane creeks

The work park staff and volunteers put in building bridges at Mount Spokane this summer and fall is paying off this winter, especially for snowshoers who can easily get across Burping Brook on the trails above the Mount Kit Carson Loop Road.
