Study links popular painkillers to sexual dysfunction in men

Men being treated for chronic pain frequently experience sexual dysfunction. Might a contributing factor be the powerful drugs often prescribed to quell their pain? A recent study analyzed data on 11,327 men with chronic back pain. More than half of them were taking an opioid painkiller, and 909 were taking a medication for erectile dysfunction or low testosterone. The longer men had taken opioids, and the higher the dose, the more likely they were to have evidence of sexual dysfunction.

Sugar-sweetened beverages linked to increased kidney stone risk

A recent study purportedly concluded that consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with a higher risk of kidney stone formation while consumption of other beverages such as coffee, tea, beer and wine, is associated with a lower risk. Conducted by a team of researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital, the study analyzed the data of 194,095 participants. Those who consumed one or more sugar-sweetened cola servings per day reportedly had a 23 percent higher risk of developing kidney stones compared to those who consumed less than one serving per week.

Renal cell carcinoma accounts for 2 to 3 percent of adult malignancies and is the third most common urologic malignancy after prostate and bladder cancer. Over the last 65 years, the rate of diagnosis has increased by approximately 2 percent per year as the use of cross-sectional diagnostic imaging has increased, largely reflecting the diagnosis of incidental renal masses.
