Idaho bighorns lack respect from state leaders
The Spokesman-Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Idaho's bighorn sheep are coveted by hunters, only a handful of which are allowed to hunt them each fall. They are a prize for wildlife viewers and a symbol of the wildness that set's Idaho apart from much of the world. Yet Idaho lawmakers have turned their backs on efforts to keep bighorns separated in their native range from domestic sheep, which can transmit diseases that have decimated bighorn herds in areas such as Hells Canyon. Montana wildlife officials loosened restrictions on wolf hunting recently, allowing trapping of the animals in the state for the first time since they were removed from the endangered species list in 2011. Casper Star-Tribune via Rapid City Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Mountain lions in the northeast part of Wyoming will not face an unlimited quota season this fall. A new proposal by Wyoming Game and Fish Department biologists called for an existing hunt area in the Black Hills to be split in two. One of the new areas would have had an unlimited quota. The area is mostly on private land and the proposed unlimited quota was primarily a response to concerns by area landowners and residents, said Tom Ryder, assistant chief of the wildlife division for the Game and Fish Department. Don't buy an elephant gun for moose hunting
The Telegraph    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Paul Smith: "What constitutes a perfect moose gun? This is a question that often sparks heated debate amongst hunters. Even armchair experts love to have a say on this one. In my view, it depends to a large degree on how you hunt. The Savage 99 chambered in .308 win was the perfect gun for me. It was a pleasure to carry, reloaded fast and was very accurate to shoot offhand. It also hit plenty hard to kill a moose cleanly out to 300 yards. Those are characteristics I seek and covet in a rifle." More
