US manufacturing expands at fastest pace in 7 months

Manufacturing in the U.S. expanded in December at the fastest pace in seven months as factories received more orders, reinforcing signs the expansion gained momentum at the end of 2010. The Institute for Supply Management's manufacturing index climbed to 57 from 56.6 in November, the Tempe, Arizona-based group said. A reading greater than 50 points to expansion, and the figure matched the median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. More

Pfizer Animal Health enters diagnostics with Synbiotics acquisition

Pfizer Animal Health of New York reported an agreement to acquire Synbiotics Corp., a Kansas City, Mo.-based developer and manufacturer of immunodiagnostic tests for companion and food production animals. The acquisition will mark Pfizer Animal Health's entry into the veterinary diagnostics sector. The move will also allow the company to expand into products for diagnostic reference laboratories and reproductive services for canine breeders. More

Appeals court rules in class-action petfood lawsuit

A 3rd District US Court of Appeals ruled that a $24 million class-action lawsuit settlement over melamine-contaminated petfood was a "fair, reasonable and adequate" deal, but sent the case back to a New Jersey district court judge for more information. The appeals court sent the case back to New Jersey U.S. District Court Judge Noel Hillman, who originally approved the deal in November 2008, for more information supporting the purchase-claim limit of $250,000. More

Indiana will consider 'exotic animal permits' in 2011

Senate Bill 17 has been pre-filed for the 2011 Indiana General Assembly session. This bill would make it a Class C misdemeanor to sell exotic or wild animals without a permit or to release an exotic or wild animal into the wild without legal authorization or a permit. The language in this bill was also introduced in 2010, as Senate Bill 280, however the bill died in committee as the General Assembly adjourned. More

Kroger recalling select pet foods in Louisiana, 18 other states

Kroger Co. is recalling select packages of pet food in 19 states, saying the products might contain aflatoxin, which poses a health risk to pets. The company said in a statement it is recalling select bags of Pet Pride Cat Food, Pet Pride Kitten Formula Food, Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food, as well as Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food and Kroger Value Cat Food. The products carry expiration dates of Oct. 23 and 24, 2011. More

MassMedia hires duo for pet marketing division

MassMedia Corporate Communications of Las Vegas has hired Steven Sandler as vice president and Pam Myers as account executive of the firm's MassMedia Pet Marketing division. Most recently vice president of sales and marketing for key accounts at Worldwise Inc., Sandler will handle business development and strategic marketing plans for the division and oversee multiple client accounts. As account executive, Myers will manage day-to-day activities of national and local pet client accounts, including public relations, advertising and online marketing. More
