Strickland orders ban on exotic pets before exit

Exiting Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland ordered a ban on new dangerous pets. According to Strickland, the order will restrict future ownership, breeding, sale, and trade or barter of wild animals "that are dangerous to human health and safety." Under the ban, those who already own exotic pets will now have to register their animals with the state will also be barred from breeding boas, tigers, bears and other wild animals. More

Texas proposal could stop trade in dozens of aquarium plants

Trade in at least 43 aquarium plant species and many water garden plants could be restricted in Texas if the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approves a proposal regulating possession of exotic aquatic plants at its meeting Jan. 27. The regulations, part of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's efforts to prevent the introduction of potentially invasive, non-native aquatic plants into the state's ecosystem, create a "white list" of plants approved for sale in the state, effectively barring trade in those plants not listed. Aratana enters animal health industry with $20 million in funding

Aratana Therapeutics of Kansas City, Kan., reported that it has received $20 million in Series A financing, led by MPM Capital and Avalon Ventures. The newly-formed company will focus on developing pharmaceutical therapies for the animal health industry. "At Aratana, we will be focused on taking advancements from the human biopharmaceutical industry and applying them in new ways to treat and care for animals," said David Rosen, DVM, president and founder of Aratana Therapeutics. Rockville, Md.-based market research firm Packaged Facts reports that the pet market totaled $52.69 billion in retail sales in 2009 (up five percent versus 2008), and overall industry sales are expected to hit as much as $59.28 billion by the end of 2011.
