Those who sell exotic pets say more thorough guidelines on the care of animals may be needed after more than 27,000 reptiles, mammals and amphibians were removed from an Arlington, Texas pet wholesaler last month, the largest seizure of its kind in U.S. history. The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to use Merrick Beef Filet Squares for dogs distributed by Merrick Pet Care with a package date of "Best By 111911" because the product may be contaminated with salmonella. The product was distributed nationwide through retail stores and Internet sales. Although no illnesses associated with these products have been reported, the FDA is advising consumers in possession of these products not to handle or feed them to their pets. Senate Bill 280 has been introduced in Indiana that would require all persons in the business of selling exotic reptiles to obtain a permit from the department, and makes it a Class C misdemeanor to sell an exotic reptile without a permit. The bill also makes it a Class C misdemeanor to release an exotic or wild animal into the wild without legal authorization or a permit issued by the Department of Natural Resources. The Delaware Department of Agriculture (Department) has adopted a rulemaking requiring all citizens of Delaware to obtain a permit from the department in order to possess, sell or exhibit "exotic animals" within the state. This proposal essentially bans the breeding of any animal considered "exotic." The regulation was originally proposed in 2009 and public comments have been received and reviewed.
