Pfizer extends offer for King Pharma shares

Pfizer Inc. said it is extending its tender offer for shares of pain drug maker King Pharmaceuticals Inc. by one week. The offer is now scheduled to expire Jan. 28 instead of Jan. 21. Pfizer agreed to buy King in October for $3.6 billion, or $14.25 per share. More

Missouri legislators seek repeal of ballot bill

Responding to the fact that the vast majority of Missouri voting districts rejected the "puppy mill" ballot initiative on Election Day, legislators have introduced multiple bills to modify the so-called "Puppy Mill Cruelty Prevention Act" or simply repeal it altogether. While heavy voting in a small number of urban districts barely provided the small margin of victory for the initiative, those who are familiar with the new law recognize that it is contrary to the interests of Missouri breeders, Missouri farmers, the people of Missouri and the animals themselves. On Jan. 4, President Barack Obama signed the Food Safety Modernization Act into law. The bill has been called a "sweeping overhaul" of the Food and Drug Administration, the first major update to the FDA's powers since 1932. Critics say that the bill, though ambitious, does not and cannot ensure an adequately safe food supply.
