Report: The Impact of FSMA on the Pet Food Industry

The Food Safety Modernization Act was signed into law Jan. 4, 2011, with a focus to "better protect human, animal and pet health by helping to ensure the safety and security of the food and feed supply." This system pushes for a worldwide set of controls, proposing many new rules and authoritative structures. Although the FDA commented it will focus more on human food facilities than pet feed facilities, the specifics have yet to unfold.

Task force still debating pet shop regulation

A legislative task force reviewing the sale of cats and dogs in Connecticut was supposed to wrap up its work on Jan. 23. Instead, the panel became embroiled another emotional conversation over how to stop breeders who raise animals in sub-standard conditions.

Dog owners, Orvis raise $1 million for Morris Animal Foundation

Dogs howl with pleasure in his presence. He is Jonathan Goldsmith, the "most interesting man in the world," according to his Dos Equis beer commercials. Goldsmith, a 75-year-old actor, has volunteered his services and his dog, Willy, for two online commercials promoting The Orvis Co.'s Dog Cover Photo Contest and Million Dollar Dog Sweepstakes. Orvis is a Manchester, Vt.-based seller of fishing and hunting equipment, sporting goods and dog products.

Waggin' Train, Milo's Kitchen treats staging comeback

Nestlé Purina PetCare Co. and Del Monte Foods Corp. are reintroducing Waggin' Train and Milo's Kitchen selections more than a year after being stung by the discover of trace amounts of unapproved antibiotics in some of their pet jerky treats. The antibiotics originated in chicken processed in China, where Nestlé Purina will continue to source some meat under strict quality controls.
