Maryland bill would prohibit breed-specific dog discrimination
PIJAC
HB 422 seeks to amend Maryland Annotated Code regarding "dogs of a specific breed, type or heritage." The bill would add Sections 5-107 and 13-102.1 to the Local Government Article to provide that a municipality or county in Maryland may not do the following.

Virginia pet food tax bill postponed to 2015 legislative session
PIJAC
On Jan. 30, PIJAC, Pet Food Institute and a coalition of other interested parties submitted testimony and requested that Senate Bill 622 be passed over for consideration this session by the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Conservation & Natural Resources. By a 15-0 vote, the committee postponed consideration of the bill until 2015. The bill's sponsor has indicated that he will work with the industry to find alternate sources of funding for Virginia's spay/neuter fund.

IBD test developed for pet boas, pythons

While Florida busies itself trying to eradicate non-native pythons in the Everglades, researchers at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine want to help pet pythons and boas through a blood test for inclusion body disease. IBD is highly infectious and usually fatal, primarily affecting boa constrictors and pythons. While snakes with IBD may display signs such as head-tilting, chronic regurgitation or disequilibrium, the problem — and the primary reason for the test — is that some infected snakes exhibit no signs and appear healthy.

Hawaii bill would require registration of 'large-scale dog ownership'

House Bill 2534, introduced on Jan. 23 by Rep. Justin H. Woodson (D-9), amends Hawaii Revised Statutes by adding a new chapter titled: "Registration of Large-Scale Dog Ownership."

New Jersey proposes Pet Groomer Licensing Act
PIJAC
Assembly Bill 2264 would amend New Jersey Statute (Chapter 16, Title 45 - Professions & Occupations) to provide for the licensing and regulation of pet groomers. "Pet groomer" is defined as an individual who bathes, brushes, clips or styles a pet for compensation.
