Big Heart Pet Brands to be acquired by J.M. Smucker Company

Big Heart Pet Brands has entered into a definitive agreement to be acquired by The J.M. Smucker Company, in a cash and stock transaction valued at approximately $5.8 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the end of Big Heart Pet Brands' current fiscal year, which ends May 3, subject to customary closing conditions including receipt of required regulatory approvals.

How Kitty Litter went from happy accident to $2 billion industry

Kitty Litter turned 68 in January. That's 334 in cat years — long enough for one man's accidental invention to become a $2 billion industry. The product's huge profits, however, are matched by a hefty unintended consequence: In the United States alone, pet litters gobble up 5 billion pounds of mined clay each year. Most of that ends up in landfills, quite literally soiled.

Why you should carry spiders at your pet store

Recently, I was asked to stock and sell tarantulas. In my mind, this translated to "pay money for spiders." Big, hairy spiders. Things that get my wife jumping on furniture to get away from them while screaming for me to kill them. I didn't take the request all that seriously and ignored it. But the requests kept coming in — rose hair tarantulas and pinktoe tarantulas. Every other store wanted them. My customers asked ... and I needed to figure it out."

Popular pet names offer cultural snapshot

Just as baby names rise and fall in popularity, so do names for our furry, four-legged friends. In recent years, traditional pet names like Fido, Fluffy and Rover have been replaced by popular baby names. In fact, a 2013 report by John Lewis Pet Insurance, which looked at 50,000 cat and dog names, found that the top 10 pet names were also among the 70 most popular baby names.
