America's Family Pet Expo, the world's largest consumer pet show and expo, has announced that it will now include the sale of reptiles during its Orange County engagement, April 20-22 at the OC Fair and Event Center, Costa Mesa. Twenty percent of all reptile booth sales at the show will benefit The United States Association of Reptile Keepers (USARK), an education and advocacy group promoting awareness and responsible care of reptiles. Hawaii proposes limit on intact dog ownership

Hawaii's state Senate is currently considering legislation that would regulate anyone in Hawaii that owns 10 or more intact dogs older than 6 months and ban outright owning 30 or more intact dogs older than 6 months. In its preamble, SB 2492 states that the legislature is concerned with the care and husbandry of dogs in the state. More

West Virginia eyes pet food registration fee increase

The West Virginia Senate Agriculture Committee will hear a bill that would raise the permit fee on certain pet food and feed packages to provide funding for a spay and neuter fund. Senate Bill 479 establishes a Spay Neuter Assistance Fund to subsidize spay and neuter programs throughout West Virginia, with the aim to decrease the number of animals euthanized in West Virginia shelters, according to the bill text. More

Maryland to create animal abuse registry

Senate Bill 301 establishes the Maryland Animal Abuse Registry and requires a person convicted of crimes involving animal cruelty to register with the county sheriff within a certain period of time after the conviction. The bill requires pet stores, breeders and animal shelters to determine whether a person seeking to purchase or adopt an animal appears on the Registry, and prohibits these entities from knowingly offering, selling, delivering, giving, or providing an animal to a person registered on the Registry. FDA urges vets to confirm safety of hand-held X-ray devices

Certain hand-held dental X-ray units sold online by manufacturers outside of the United States could pose a radiation risk, according to the Food and Drug Administration. The agency warned dental and veterinary professionals to not purchase or use hand-held dental X-ray devices without first verifying that the devices have been reviewed and tested to meet FDA standards.
