Florida's Representative Rooney proposes large constrictor ban under the Lacey Act

U.S. Representative Tom Rooney, D-Fla., has introduced H.R. 511 to add large constrictors to the "injurious wildlife" list under the Lacey Act. The bill has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary. H.R. 511 would unilaterally ban importation and interstate movement of each of several species. The Rooney bill is a reintroduction of the previous bills calling for listing large constrictors under the Lacey Act. The listing would directly impact breeders, exporters, pet stores and pet owners across the country. More

Hawaii to develop aquarium collecting 'white list'

Companion legislation (House Bill 590 and Senate Bill 1098) has been introduced in Hawaii, proposing the development of an aquarium collecting "white list" by the Department of Land and Natural Resources. HB 590 has been assigned to the House Committee on Water, Land and Ocean Resources while SB 1098 has been sent to the Senate Committee on Water, Land and Housing. More

Irvine, California, considers ban on circuses, petting zoos, sale of dogs and cats

Irvine is considering sweep rules that would ban the sale of cats and dogs at retail shops in the city and bar traveling animal-entertainment acts such as circuses, petting zoos and rodeos from coming to town. Legislation to protect "companion animals" is being drafted, and a City Council majority voted last week for formal plans implementing the three animal-welfare ordinances to be drawn up and presented in 120 days. Palm Beach County considers tougher rules for pet shops

Palm Beach County commissioners will consider requiring pet stores to tell customers where the puppies and kittens they sell were born and bred. The rules, part of a sweeping reform package, would make pet stores display a notice on each cage in no less than 12-point type disclosing a laundry list of information about the animal, including the names and addresses of the people who bred the dog or cat and who sold it to the shop.
