Illinois bill calls for pet shops to charge fee on dog and cat sales to benefit animal shelters

A hearing will be held on Tuesday, March 8 on Illinois Senate Bill 1840 to consider mandating pet shops to collect a $15 fee for every dog and cat a shop sells. The fee will go towards the state "Pet Population Control Fund" and be dispersed to animal shelters. The bill states that "a pet shop shall collect $15 for each dog or cat sold. The money shall be sent quarterly to the Department of Public Health and be deposited in the Pet Population Control Fund. The Department shall distribute the proceeds of this fee to qualified animal shelters." More

Aratana gets rights to 2 compounds for animal use

Aratana Therapeutics Inc. of Kansas City, Kan., reported that it has entered into a license agreement with RaQualia Pharma Inc. to develop two compounds from RaQualia's human clinical development portfolio for companion animal use. As part of the agreement, Aratana will be granted global rights for development and commercialization of the licensed animal health products. In exchange, the Japanese company will receive upfront payment, development milestones and royalties on global sales. More

They live in the only U.S. state besides Hawaii that bans residents from keeping ferrets as pets, forcing an untold number of Californians to keep their beloved weasels hidden from the public. PetEdge, Dog is Good ink licensing deal

PetEdge Inc. of Beverly, Mass., has signed a licensing deal with Dog is Good LLC to manufacturer Dog is Good-branded pet products. Under the agreement, PetEdge will develop, manufacture and distribute an array of Dog is Good-branded pet products, including toys, collars, leashes, harnesses, apparel, dishes, grooming tools, treats and supplements, said Denise Tedaldi, PetEdge's vice president of merchandising and product development.
