Americans spent $58 billion to pamper, protect pets in 2014
The Associated Press via Winston-Salem Journal
A pet industry trade group says Americans spent $58 billion on their pets in 2014. The American Pet Products Association says that includes $22 billion for food, $15 billion for veterinary care and $14 billion for supplies such as bowls and beds and medicines for fleas and ticks.

NASC brings clarity to animal supplements category

The National Animal Supplement Council of Valley Center, California, has partnered with PetHealthLive on two websites to bring better animal health supplement information to pet retailers and consumers. In addition, the NASC introduced a targeted program for 2015 that includes the NASC Quality Seal for manufacturing processes, while the organization's Preferred Supplier Program assists members in using raw materials from vetted suppliers.

Pet Valu acquires Jack's Pets retail chain
Pet Business
Canadian pet retailer Pet Valu has acquired the 32-store Jack's Pets chain, as well as its online pet product outlet, petsolutions.com. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. The company, which currently operates more than 620 stores in North America, including 200 stores in the Midwestern and Mid-Atlantic United States, plans to renovate and rebrand the Jack's Pets locations as Pet Valu stores over the next 18 to 24 months.

Pooch palace? Samsung launches $31K dog kennel

Samsung's smartphones might be losing market share, but the South Korean tech giant is embarking into a new area — high-tech, luxury dog kennels. Samsung Electronics unveiled the Dream Doghouse, which cost $30,600 to make. Aimed at "tech-savvy pampered pooches," the one-off design will be on display this month at Crufts, the world's largest dog show, of which Samsung is a long-term sponsor.
