Mr. Oh was unanimously elected to the position, which carries a one-year term, at the Feb. 20 Board Meeting. He has served on the PIJAC Board of Directors for the past two years. More

Craig Shearman, the National Retail Federation's VP of Government Affairs PR, writes, "When I first got 'volunteered' to do PR on swipe fees half a dozen years ago, I thought this was a subject for what my old boss on Capitol Hill used to call 'green eye-shaded accountants.' Who could care about a couple of percentage points on a credit or debit card transaction? It turns out credit card swipe fees add up to $30 billion a year and have tripled over the past decade. Retailers have been fighting these fees for years, but a key turning point in that battle is coming in the next couple of months." More

One pet distributor to another as Phillips acquires Royal

Phillips Pet Food & Supplies, a distributor based in Easton, Pa., has jumped into the aquatics sector with the acquisition of a competitor, Royal Pet Supplies. Royal's distribution centers in Brentwood, N.Y., and Pompano Beach, Fla., will join Phillips' six-warehouse network. Phillips operates facilities in Easton; Taunton, Mass.; Spartanburg, S.C.; Plant City, Fla.; Clyde, Ohio; and Indianapolis. More

NOAA announces public hearing, grants extention of public comment period on coral

On Feb. 25, 2013, NOAA published a Notice in the Federal Register extending the time to submit public comments on NOAA's proposal to list 12 coral species as "Endangered" and 54 coral species as "Threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. While PIJAC requested a 90-day extension and a D.C. public hearing, NOAA granted a 30-day extension until April 6, 2013. NOAA also announced that a public hearing will be held on March 12 from 6 to 9 p.m. at their Silver Spring, Maryland offices. More

A recent survey conducted by DogTrekker.com showed that roughly a quarter of all leisure travelers own dogs and bring them on their trips. The survey further indicated that more travelers would probably bring their pets with them if not for the inability to find truly dog-friendly accommodations. With such high interest in traveling with pets, hotels and destinations that don't start catering to the needs of both man and man's best friend will miss out on a growing trend. More
