New Jersey township to close pet shops and kennels

An ordinance to ban the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores and kennels in the Township of Brick, New Jersey is set to be heard by the Township Council on Tuesday, March 13. The proposal defines a pet shop as "any room or group of rooms or cages or exhibition pen or other establishment which is not part of a kennel, wherein animals, including, but not limited to, dogs, cats, birds, fish, reptiles, rabbits, hamsters or gerbils, are kept, displayed or offered for sale." This proposal bans all breeding facilities with more than 10 dogs and cats as well as retail pet sales in Brick Township. More

FDA answers questions on chicken jerky treats from China

Continued complaints of dogs becoming ill from consuming chicken jerky treats from China prompted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to release a "frequently asked questions"-style document. The cause of the illnesses is still a mystery, according to the FDA. Product samples are being tested by FDA laboratories, the Veterinary Laboratory Response Network and other animal health diagnostic laboratories for multiple chemical and microbiological contaminants. More
