Small Business Trends    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When it comes to marketing a business the frequent complaint from small business owners is that marketing rarely works or just isn't worth the expense. For those business owners here are the reasons below as to why that may seem to be true. (But it isn't.) More

Keeping your options open could be hurting your career

Are you the seven-foot superhero, the conniving villain, the strong-willed woman, or the family-man cop? You'd better be one of them, or risk being cut from the cast. After studying Hollywood actors for three years, MIT Professor Ezra Zuckerman found that actors who typecast themselves early in their careers tend to earn more money, have longer lifespans, and enjoy more fame compared to generalist actors. Moreover, young actors who specialize are able to land their first role quicker and receive more job offers over the course of their careers. There's a lesson in this research for career generalists wondering whether it's time to specialize in their next role, either within their current organizations or in a completely new company. More

It is easy to assume that if you do not hear anything, things are probably good. However, people can be silent out of either a timid disposition or a "get-along" culture. They may even think that they are being respectful by keeping things to themselves. It is not enough to have feedback mechanisms in place, an open door policy or a well-trained customer service staff. If you want to keep customers happy and grow loyalty, you need to solicit feedback actively from your customers. More

With a spring in their step, retailers marked 20 consecutive months of sustained year-over-year retail sales growth in February as unseasonably warm temperatures and comparisons with weak sales in 2011 resulted in stronger-than-expected increases. PIJAC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
At its regular meeting March 13, 2012, the Brick, N.J Township Council considered an ordinance to ban the sale of dogs and cats in pet stores and kennels. Because of the level of feedback on the proposal, the Council elected to temporarily table it pending action by a subcommittee. The original proposal would have prohibited pet shops from selling dogs and cats as well as banning any kennel housing more than 10 dogs and cats a year. This proposal is not yet dead, and those concerned about a future pet ban in Brick Township are urged to contact members of the committee to express opposition. More

According to David Lummis, senior pet market analyst for Packaged Facts, in his presentation U.S. Pet Food Market Update, 2011: Marketing the Benefits of Pet Ownership, pet parents are different shoppers than they were after the 2007 recalls and the 2008 global recession. This "new normal" shopper is more likely to switch brands, channels and stores, so now it's more important than ever to emphasize the benefits of not only your pet food or treat product, but the ownership of pets in general.
