Utah county considering amendments to dog breeder ordinance

The County Council of Salt Lake County, Utah has proposed amendments to an ordinance passed in December, 2010 pertaining to dog breeders. The ordinance currently requires that dog breeders who whelp more than one litter of puppies a year must obtain a breeder license annually. The Council is proposing to change that requirement to a five year license and to apply to any litter produced by breeders, not just the current "more than one litter each year." The ordinance covers everything from licensing requirements to standards of care to inspections. The Council first introduced the amendments at its March 22 meeting, in which the proposal was preliminarily approved, and it is set for a second reading and possible vote at the Tuesday, March 29 meeting. Arizona: Mandatory microchip requirement for kennel permits proposed

Under this legislation, any person operating a kennel must implant a microchip in each dog that is three months of age or older and that remains in the kennel before a kennel permit will be issued. If a kennel operator obtains a permit, all dogs must be microchipped within 30 days of reaching three months old or within 30 days after the dog arrives at the kennel. More

Pet industry thrives despite trend toward saving money

The industry grew 26 percent between 2006 and 2010, despite having to weather the Great Recession. According to a National Pet Owners Survey, 62 percent of U.S. households own a pet and in an American Pet Products Association survey, it was noted that Americans spent an estimated $47.7 billion on pets in 2010. California seeks to prioritize investigations of unlicensed vets

California has introduced a bill that would require the state’s veterinary medical board to prioritize investigations of unlicensed individuals holding themselves to be veterinarians and veterinarian technicians. A public hearing on the measure is set for Monday, April 11, 2011. More
