Consumer spending in U.S. increases for fifth month

Consumer spending in the U.S. rose in February for a fifth consecutive month, a rebound that may accelerate when employment strengthens. "The consumer is still making traction with the overall recovery," said Russell Price, a senior economist at Ameriprise Financial Inc. in Detroit, who accurately forecast the rise in spending. "Factors are falling into place for the recovery to be sustained." More

Hermosa Beach to ban pet sales in stores

Hermosa Beach does not have any pet stores that sell dogs or cats — and if the city council has its way, it never will. City officials took the first step in banning the sale of dogs and cats in city pet stores — a move designed to raise awareness about animal welfare issues, discourage puppy mills and encourage pet adoptions. A final vote is planned April 13. More

Nature's Variety, a Lincoln, Neb.-based manufacturer of pet food, has unveiled preliminary findings of its study of raw diets for dogs. The findings suggest a raw food diet is a viable and healthy dietary option for dogs.
