Report: Diabetes rising among US pets

Diabetes is on the rise among pets, according to a national analysis of pet health recently released. The 2011 "State of Pet Health" report is based on data from more than 2.5 million dogs and cats that visited Banfield Pet Hospital facilities in 43 states. The study found that diabetes and other "human" diseases are on the rise in animals, with rates of diabetes in cats and dogs rising faster than for humans. More

A Target stores trial program filling veterinary prescriptions for animal-specific medications is being well received by customers, the Minneapolis-based retailer reported. Human medicines used for animals have long been available at pharmacies, but until now, animal-specific medications have not been. More

Hawaii bill prohibits sale of unsterilized pets

The Hawaii Senate amended a House bill on animal cruelty to accomplish a completely different goal — prohibiting pet owners from making responsible choices about whether and when to spay-neuter their dogs and cats. As introduced and passed by the Hawaii House of Representatives, House Bill 243 dealt with humane killing of animals. The Senate, however, amended the measure to ban the sale of dogs and cats by retailers unless the animal has first been sterilized. PIJAC urges all those who wish to preserve the right to have pets to immediately contact conference committee members to oppose this change. More
