A process called "tender steering" is new to most retailers. It means that a retailer can provide incentives to customers to use a particular type of card to pay. This method could give retailers the power to drive interchange rates down by driving customers to some types of cards and away from others. You might think that after half a century of having little or no control over the fees they pay to accept card payments, retailers would be demanding that all mobile commerce products and NFC-enabled systems support tender steering. Pet health insurance has been available in the United States for nearly 30 years, but expanded veterinary treatments and changing attitudes toward the family pet has bolstered the number of policies over the past decade, even during the economic downturn. "The humanization of pets is driving it, as people are more likely to treat pets as four-legged members of their family," said Grant Biniasz, a spokesperson for VPI Pet Insurance based in Brea, Calif., the largest pet insurance provider in the nation. "The Pet Market," an analysis by Adem Lab of Parma University, looks at the global market for pet food and pet products, as well as how consumers access information on pet ownership and care through different retail channels. A 2010 survey from AISAD, an Italian pet association, looked at the most trusted places for consumers to gain information on matters related to pet ownership. The survey found specialty stores to be the most trusted for advice on pet care, hygiene, nutrition and dog registration. More
