PetSmart and General Nutrition Centers Inc. (GNC) are launching a line of dietary supplements designed for dogs and cats. This line, made exclusively for PetSmart, will be available at their retail stores and on their Web sites beginning this fall. The co-branding of a major human supplement brand like GNC into the pet market could be a coup for PetSmart, given the current strong consumer demand for health and human-themed products. More

Nutramax to move operations to South Carolina

Nutramax Laboratories Inc. and Nutramax Manufacturing Inc. have plans to locate new operations in Lancaster, S.C. The move will allow the nutraceutical developer to increase its production capacity for new and existing products in its veterinary and consumer divisions. Nutramax will invest about $12.5 million in acquiring, updating and expanding existing facilities. More

Minnesota to consider regulation of commercial breeders

Senate Bill 3385 would regulate commercial breeding activities in Minnesota. The legislation designates the State Board of Veterinary Medicine to regulate breeding activities and sets forth licensing and inspection requirements for breeders as well as standards of care and penalties for violators. Some of the penalties presented in this bill also affect pet dealers and brokers as well. More

Animal Health Sciences buys Yamaha plant

Metro Atlanta's Animal Health Sciences bought the former Yamaha Music Manufacturing facility in Thomaston, Ga., for an undisclosed amount. Smyrna, Ga.-based Animal Health Sciences will expand manufacturing at the 275,000-square-foot Yamaha property. The plant, on 75 acres, will be the new production site for Animal Health Sciences, which makes products for domestic pets and livestock/equine care. More
