Why America's falling birth rate is positive news for pet industry

Jordan Weissmann writes, "Conservative writer Jonathan Last, author of 'What to Expect When Nobody's Expecting,' likes to argue that pets are gradually replacing children in the hearts of American couples — giving them an outlet for all their nurturing instincts at a fraction of the cost and hassle. As someone who grew up with two dogs (though, admittedly, no siblings), I'm a bit skeptical about the theory. But I couldn't help but think of it when looking at this graph from the Bureau of Labor Statistics illustrating how much households spend on animal companions."

Small business favors social media over location marketing

As more small businesses begin to utilize mobile technology and social media marketing, location-based marketing is taking a backseat. Ninety-seven percent of business owners recently surveyed said they are using social media channels, including YouTube, Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, to market their businesses. On the other hand, just 17 percent of businesses say they utilize location-based promotions, such as Foursquare, in promoting their business.

Study: Vet infection-control practices inadequate
The infection control practices of veterinarians are inadequate, with almost half of vets contracting infections from animals during their career, an Australian study has found. The findings of the research, led by the University of Sydney, have been published in the journal Preventive Veterinary Medicine.

Relief comes quickly for tornadoes' animal victims

Groups ranging from the Petfinder Foundation to the Central Oklahoma Humane Society are working to assist pets injured or lost in recent tornadoes that killed at least two dozen people. The natural disaster, which ravaged a wide area south of Oklahoma City, also moved medical products distributor Henry Schein Inc. to open a hot line serving veterinarians, dentists and physicians.
